Counselor Program Overview

Counselor Team:

Each year HBRA employs a team of counselors to coordinate and supervise the resort's daily activities, especially those for the children of the resort families.

The counselor team usually consists of four counselors, who share their various duties on a rotating basis. In some years, if one of the counselors is returning from a previous year, that counselor might serve as Head Counselor with some supervisory duties.

The key attributes of a successful counselor team are: Safety, Creativity, and Cooperation.

Counselor Duties and Responsibilities; The Counselor Team is Directly Responsible For:

The safety and well-being of all participants in counselor-supervised areas and activities.

Maintaining and monitoring the resort swimming pool and beach operations each morning and afternoon.

Coordinating creative children's activities for Morning Rec, Afternoon Rec, and Night Rec (exceptions below) each day.

Coordinating the Friday Night Kiddie Dance (every Friday evening after dinner) and the Saturday Night Adult Dances (twice per summer) as required.

Besides the above responsibilities and the activities suggested in this program, the counselor team is encouraged to create an exciting and satisfying program of activities for the resort children.

Season and Daily Schedule:

The resort season opens in late June each summer, and ends after the third or fourth weekend in August.

The counselor team is responsible for coordinating resort activities seven days per week during the season, and the counselors are 'on duty' from 8:00 in the morning until approximately 9:00 in the evening, depending upon the evening activities for that particular day.

There is no Clubhouse dinner and no Night Rec activities on Wednesday or Sunday evenings, so the counselors are off duty on those evenings.

Each counselor will have one full day off each week -- usually on a Sunday, Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday when the resort activities are slower. If scheduling permits, the counselor will also be excused from activities on the evening before their day off.

Changes in the counselors' schedules are made at the discretion of the resort Manager.

Room and Board:

Counselors are provided sleeping rooms in the staff building; these rooms include bath towels, bed sheets, pillows and blankets as needed.

Counselors will have the use of a washing machine and clothes dryer.

Counselors are provided three meals per day in the Clubhouse Dining Room, except Wednesday and Sunday evenings when no dinner is served. Counselors eat together at a table designated for them, and being present at each meal is strongly encouraged.

Counselors should bring with them comfortable, casual clothes for the workday: shorts, jeans, swimming suits, sandals or sneakers, etc. The dress in the Clubhouse for breakfast and lunch is casual. The dress for dinner is more formal: a nice dress, skirt or slacks for the ladies; a jacket and tie with dress shirt and nice slacks for the men.

Counselor Expectations:

Counselors are expected to be honest, creative and hard-working throughout the season. Each group of resort children will have different needs, depending upon their ages and genders, and the counselors are expected to coordinate activites which best suit the group of children present.

Counselor Experience and Requirements:

Counselors should have some level of first aid and CPR training, or equivalent, as determined by the resort Manager.

Counselors should be strong, experienced swimmers; and are encouraged to have some level of swimming and lifeguarding training.
