Friday Night Dance

Friday Night Kiddie Dance and 'The Grand March'

Each Friday evening after dinner -- at approximately 8:00 p.m. -- the entire resort, from grandparents to the youngest babies, gathers in the Casino for various traditional games and activities. The Manager and counselors are responsible for setting up the Casino for these activities, confirming the piano player, ordering and delivering popsicles to the Casino freezer, and for coordinating the games and dance.

Musical Chairs: The younger children first play Musical Chairs. One or two counselors supervise the game and pull away the chairs, while the piano player conducts the music. Play one or two games, depending on how many kids of which ages are present (on busy weekends, you might play one game for the littlest kids, then one game for the older kids). Prepare for a few tears...

The Hokey-Pokey: After Musical Chairs, everyone gathers in a big circle on the Casino floor and does a dance called the 'Hokey-Pokey.'
(Follow the correct order: Left hand, right hand, left foot, right foot, left hip, right hip, head, whole self!)

The Grand March: A resort tradition for as long as anyone can remember. Immediately after the Hokey-Pokey, everyone pairs up with a partner in a long line starting at the front of the Casino. The first couple should be experienced in leading the March. One Manager or counselor or designated resorter stands at either end of the line and directs the participants. The piano player plays The Notre Dame Fight Song (over and over and over!) as the participants march hand-in-hand through a variety of lines and steps. Watching 'the spanking machine' is a once in a lifetime experience. After marching through a twisting spiral -- with screams of 'tighter! tighter!' -- everyone spreads out into a large circle around the room, then swoops into the center three times while the overhead lights dim, then it's over...

Popsicles after the Grand March: Immediately after the Grand March, all kids will flock to the bar for popsicles. Be sure to have plenty on hand and ready to hand out.
